The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the Woods. Alli says “Lovecraftian Hunger Games in the style of Dollhouse meets bloody zombie flick.” That’s a better summary than I could have come up with. I do not watch horror movies, and only watched this one because it’s co-written and produced by Joss Whedon, and co-starring Topher and Whiskey from Dollhouse. This, however, was a damn good movie. It’s actually the best movie I’ve seen this year, strange to say.
Properly explaining why this movie is good would involve spoilers, so the best I can say is that it’s a horror movie with all the cliche horror movie elements played straight but also twisted, but not as a parody per se. It has humor but is not a comedy, is gory but not gimmick-scary in the way that horror movies frequently resort to. And it’s co-written by Whedon, so it has his trademark cleverness (but not much of his Whedonisms [his odd/witty turns of phrase which some people find annoying]). It does have gore, and one scene of nudity, but if you can handle that, I recommend this movie.
